My Father’s Daughter is a true story of the battle for survival of an American family from the early 1600s, to today. From defying the odds of fate while pioneering a new country they developed new family traditions of courage and strength in learning how to survive and live with today’s hereditary cancers of Lynch syndrome.

Introducing the reader  to her family and to their experiences from settling America to living through America’s ugly history of eugenics when genetic discrimination was strongly advocated by the United States government, top leaders and medical professionals during the early 1900s when the practice of mandatory sterilization of tens of thousands of persons occurred in order to perfect the quality of human beings . It reviews centuries of discussion on cancer and hereditary cancers and explains how Lindy and her family are surviving today.

My Father’s Daughter tells the story of the present day life of Lindy, who lived differently than her father, and his father, and his mother, and her father, and all those others in between. Unlike them, or the members of her mother’s family who were plagued with a familial breast cancer syndrome, she did not spend a lifetime waiting for cancer to strike. She confronted fear and uncertainty.

Her work in the dangerous prisons and upon the volatile California streets became her lifeline as she lived life on her terms and flirted with danger, defying mortality and taking control over an uncertain fate.

Lindy takes the reader into the cloistered lives of the criminal where she supervises them in the notorious Soledad and San Quentin Prisons and continues into the violent urban neighborhoods where she works as a parole agent, monitoring  the most violent of California’s criminals. Her job is volatile and becomes an excellent training ground in developing survival skills.

After leaving an action lived career, Lindy embarks upon a genetic journey, following a diagnosis of cancer. Step-by-step, she details the symptoms, the fear, the treatment, the preventative measures, and the annual screenings she undergoes to live. To find what is behind the cancer deaths in her family and to save the lives of her loved ones, Lindy delves into the past and dives into the present, with genetic testing. She takes the reader through the process of her genetic counseling experience and provides a guide to assist others to better live with Lynch syndrome.

My Father’s Daughter is not just a book on Lynch syndrome and hereditary cancers, but a story of survival. It is one of everyday people and families dealing with difficult situations, struggling to live. My Father’s Daughter serves as a voice of those whose desire to survive and live life on their terms, a voice that is often not heard.

Sometimes heartrending, sometimes tough, sometimes funny, and sometimes action filled, My Fathers Daughter reinforces the positive aspects of life and the opportunities to live which exist today, opposed to the little hope which existed only two decades ago. For those journeying through the difficult challenges of life, Lindy offers an understanding of how to protect one’s self.
